Named after The Rev’d David Binns, one of Australia’s finest religious artists, priest of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane, and inaugural director of the Brookfield Centre for Christian Spirituality from 1992 -2004, this annual lecture series was established in 2009 to recognise David’s life and work.
David’s boundless complex imagination encouraged us to ‘see’ outside the square. His intimate preaching style was redolent with symbolism often drawn from the world of film reflecting his passionate love of the cinema, and from his love for and interest in the natural world which was frequently a mark of his work. Passionate about sharing his love of God and his beloved saints Francis and Clare, he helped us see the God to be found in our neighbour. David was deeply committed to ecumenism and the interfaith dialogue.
This lecture series examines the relationship between spirituality, theology and the imagination, both in the particular sense of the creative arts and in the broader sense of innovation and re-imagining.
To nurture our understanding of living life in the Spirit in the twenty-first century, each lecture comes with a series of questions and statements to encourage ongoing reflection and discussion on the material.
